Really, you thunk in your heart of hearts he would slay the giant? He had tried 7 times before in Grand Slams and lost all 7. Why was this to be different? Roddick was 19-2 all time against Roger. Why did so many of us give him hope?? We are looking for your thoughts on a variety of topics, you choose. Crowds were up at the CWS in Omaha, were you as interested this year with perennial powers Texas and LSU fighting for the national title. The US Open goes to Lucas Glover. Will Tiger or Phil win a major this year, I say yes....take Tiger in the British. It's nice to have an underdog win, but not all the time. The funny thing, or sad for some, is that when Tiger and Phil and not winning neither are Sergio or Furyk or Adam Scott or Vijay, etc, etc, etc. This is their chance. Tiger recovering from knee surgery and Phil's life turned upside down with Amy's cancer. Will someone step up?

Major League Baseball is on the front burner, fitting since the temps are in the high 90's!! Everyone is bashing the Cubs, yet they are just 2 1/2 back. The Royals early season run ended a month ago. Every winning streak seems to be equaled by a longer losing streak!! It's Boston and New York in the east again. Do you see any team making a run in the second half and surprising the baseball world?? Let us know, we always value your opinion.

Just some random thoughts today....add yours!!!

OMAHA!!

Remember the disappointment of falling short of destination Omaha? The Big 12 had a nation leading 8 teams selected for the 64 team field. How many are left??? ONE...and that's the overall number one seed Texas, who needed an 8-run 9th inning to beat the 4-seed ARMY. Now, if Texas is the top seed in the nation, doesn't that make Army the worst team in the field??? So... Texas eeks out a win over the worst team in the field, and the other 7 Big 12 teams don't make it out of the first weekend of play. Am I supposed to buy that the Big 12 was tough this season? There was no dominant team in the conference this year, and that showed this past weekend. If this happened in the men's bb tournament, or the conference went 1-7 in bowl games, everyone would be trashing the conference. Hell, he would play them 4 times a year if the schedule would allow. Not even NFL fans in general want him back. In, out, whatever, just make up your mind they say. No wait, get me the number for his agent!! That guy is the real talent!! 4 million for that?? Why be negative? He is on an extended vacation. It's been a long, hard winter on the big fella and I'm sure he'll be refreshed and ready to go when he returns. The Nebraska baseball team continues to struggle, and now they get ready to hit the road for seven straight. This weekend's series against preseason #1 Texas A&M will not be easy, because the Aggies are struggling as well. Of course if Mike Anderson gets the better of Rob Childress, in a battle of former Husker assistants, that would ease the pain in Lincoln.

How 'bout that Masters?!?! I find it interesting that there is a huge debate on how good this Sunday's round was. Some are calling the theatre on Sunday the best ever. Really??? I'm just wondering when either Tiger or Phil will finish off a great Sunday comeback in a major, because it's never happened. Will it ever happen and how many Majors will those two win this year??

Give us your thoughts and blog away on any other topic you would like us to discuss on the 'Doug and Daddy Show'. Week 1 of the NFL finally arrived once again in spectacular fashion and showed why it is the KING. Do we know of another sport out there that can loose its star player in the first half of the season and yet not one tv was shut off? Atlanta was up 21 in the first half? Did not know that they would score that much in the first month? Carson or was that Arnold Palmer throwing for under 100 yards? Bears spoil Archie's son's debut at Lucas Oil Stadium? No way!! Panthers go into San Diego and win? Titans stun Jaguars? Bills bash Seattle? Those are a few of the highlights. To be sure there will be many more. When that happens, football talk always seems to take over...and so it has on the show. Everyday we have caught up with a journalist/broadcaster from a different Big 12 team to preview their upcoming season. The first big weekend of college football starts August 30th. So with over a month to go before the regular season begins, and another month before Big 12 play begins, how do you think the conference race will shake out? Almost all of our guests have picked Oklahoma and Missouri to battle in the conference championship game this December in Kansas City. Chase Daniel is the overwhelming selection as 'player of the year'. What are your thoughts? We'll be headed to Kansas City for Big 12 Media Days, July 21st-23rd. Be sure to tune in for all the coaches and player interviews! Let us know on this blog what you want to know, we'll try and find out the answers for ya.

Husker Football Talk has begun!!!

Have to think that the last two days of our show got a little blood pumping in several Husker fans veins! The NBA is setting up for a couple of good conference finals series, the Major League Baseball season is heating up, and Big Brown is set to make a run at the Triple Crown. But, the best thing you can watch now is…….the STANLEY CUP FINALS!!! That’s right. Hockey. The Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins have been the two best teams in hockey this year, especially down the playoff stretch. It should be a compelling series, with the Red Wings bringing plenty of experience and offensive prowess with Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, as well as a knack for finding the weakness in their opponent. For what the Penguins lack in playoff experience, they more than make up for it with sheer talent and an outstanding offensive attack, led by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
If you are looking at one aspect of the game that will decide the series, it will be the power-play. Both teams have been fantastic in scoring in their power-play, with the Red Wings looking particularly efficient. The Wings set up a simple PP offense by sticking one man in front of the net to screen the goalie and have a chance at deflecting slap shots into the net. From there, they simply work the puck from the corners back to the point, looking for open shots. It’s a simple setup, and has been very productive through the playoffs.
The goaltending match-up should be fun to watch too, with Detroit’s veteran Chris Osgood and Pittburgh’s young gun Marc-Andre Fluery.
Another thing to watch for in this series is physical play. Even though both of these teams could be called “finesse” teams, especially the Wings, you must play physical at this point to win the Stanley Cup. I expect to see some hard-nosed physical play, and guys like Georges Laraque make Pittsburgh the more physical of the two. However, with physical play comes more penalties, which have to be avoided.
For me, the team that can be physical, yet stay out of penalty trouble and take advantage of power play opportunities will win the series. As strong as Detroit has looked these playoffs, I like the Pittsburgh to win in 7, with the Penguins winning a close game seven in Detroit. But regardless of who wins, it is going to be some absolutely great hockey……..so make sure to tune in!!!!

Nebraska Baseball

Nebraska in everyone's mind limps into the BIG 12 tournament this week in Oklahoma City after loosing 4 of the last 6 games. Well plenty to talk about, including the leftovers of the NFL Draft. Daddy thinks having only 3 Nebraska players drafted was Bill Callahan's fault....did you expect more? What a difference a year makes. At this time last year Sam Keller may have been a first day selelction...now he waits 3 days before Tampa Bay invites him to mini-camp. NO CHANCE!!! Too many QB's at Tampa, look for Sam on a 50-yard field on ESPN 2 next season. The same will not be said for Danny Woodhead. I'm not sure if I was more surprised or disappointed that he was not drafted, but no matter, he will make an NFL roster. I think we'll see Woodhead scoring on the Patriots before the season is up. What do you think about Woodhead, he's done everything possible in his career?!?! May is another busy month with soccer, track, golf and baseball coming to a close on the high school level. I'll be at district track meets in Bertrand and Elm Creek, plus full coverage of the state meet at Omaha. Kearney boys a lock in Class A?? Have a great month and enjoy some nicer weather (we hope)!

Y MUST IT END SO SOON??

With Davidson FINALLY out of the way I must commend the committee for a job well done. I believe if you read my March 13th blog, "65 is plenty" the number of teams really needed was 4 and in the women's 8? Yes, I enjoy the field and all the games but my point was, "How many teams really have a chance to win?" Yes, many would still have never heard of Stephen Curry and yes Davidson really had a nice run. Nice runs end usually in the Sweet 16 and they were able to make it to the field of 8!! The 4 best teams all year will play for it all this weekend in San Antonio and Tampa (sorry don't mean to leave the ladies out). Argue now for for a best of 3 or 5? Why can't we prolong the best teams meeting? Why does it have to end on Monday? Why not take a page from the NBA playbook? They certainly know how to drag things out. Oh, and don't tell me if Tennessee and UCONN would meet in the women's final that you would not tune in to all 3 or5 of them? Enjoy the weekend and Monday night it will all be over much to soon!!! Some say let all 341 in? Others, let 10 bubble teams battle for 5 spots and make it a field of 70? More think 128 would be ideal? Really?? Would that do anything other than make Las Vegas froth at the mouth? Oh, shouldn't say that, the NCAA would cringe. Anyway, I look at the bubble teams: UMASS, OHIO ST., Florida, VCU, UAB, DAYTON?? Make an argument that any of these teams would advance past the first weekend. OH, you can't? We are looking for the best team in the nation. Sure, cinderella is wonderful and makes some great storylines but seriously how far down do we have to look? Xavier, Drake, and Butler are ranked between 10 and 18 in the nation!! These 3 have zero and I mean ZERO chance of winning on a Monday night in April. My point is 64 is plenty and really 10 would probably be good enough. I enjoy the madness and the upsets are fun but in the end we are looking for the CHAMPION!! Enjoy the tourney and roll your eyes when the talk turns to expanding the tourney!!

Postseason and New Season

In the sports world we are reaching another crossroads, where one season ends as another begins. Locally the high school winter sports season is winding down as district basketball continues. Nebraska comes off a big hoops win over Kansas St, but I believe the excitement will be short lived as they travel to Texas A&M on Saturday. The Nebraska baseball team opens up the 2008 season on Friday at Stanford. We had both starting pitchers on the show Thursday, Thad Weber and Jeremy Bleich, and both have something to prove for there respective teams this season. Not much is expected from this year's Nebraska baseball team. The Big 12 coaches selected them 6th and some, including Daddy, think that may be too high! Stanford also looks to bounce back after a subpar season last year. The 2 teams play a doubleheader Friday starting at 4. Looking forward to some great district finals over the next few days and a few area teams are hoping the ball bounces the right way to qualify via the wild card. Enjoy the games!

Clemens,Wrestling,etc

As Roger Clemens sits before Congress today, I can harldy watch. I'm not sure I care. I hope Clemens is innocent, even though he's been a Yankee part of his career. His performances, statistics and years in the game are all astounding. Now all can be washed away in a scene that reminds me of "All the President's Men". How boring and long these hearings are, with most of the Congress given facts by their aides with no real knowledge of the facts. Do you care? Will you watch?

On another note...it's an exciting time of the year on the high school scene...POSTSEASON. The state wrestling tournament is this weekend, and I will be in Omaha covering this great event. I believe the single greatest moment in high school sports is the 'Parade of Champions' which occurs every Saturday before the finals. Don't forget we'll provide coverage all weekend with the semifinals live on Friday night on 98.9FM.

Don't wait till March!!

With the temp. a mere 9 degress with a wind chill of -18 on PHAT Tuesday I took it upon myself to settle into my couch and catch a little college basketball. If you missed the second half of the Tennessee/ Florida game lets just say you missed out!! Chris Lofton along with JaJaun Smith and Tyler Smith will get your blood flowing. The trio combined to score 72 of the 104 pts the Vols put up with Lofton and J. Smith hitting 12 3's!! 60 points were scored in the second half for Bruce Pearl's Vol's while Billy Donovan stood in shock. This Tenn. team left the tourney early just a year ago but with only 2 losses this season, both on the road at Texas and Kentucky, I say this is a real contender come March. All this on the eve of UNC vs. Duke in perhaps the greatest rivalry in sports!! Dick V. back on the sideline can it get any better?? People, I hear all the time "I really don't pay attention until March gets here." To that I say, you are missing out on one of the finest and deepest college basketball seasons in a long time!!!
Big Daddy

When is enough, enough??

It is Thursday afternoon and I continue to waver on the prediction tommorrow?? Alicia lookes good but I think I could fit into a pair of Jordan's jean's!! Oh well, the game will go on and the hype will too!! Right now I am leaning towards the side of New England as I think Mr. Personality (Belichick) will stop those kickoff returns and win the special teams battle and if that happens I think it is game, set, match and HISTORY!!!! We all know the last time these two battled it came down to Kickoff returns as to keeping the Giants in the game. That stops and the crystal ball says: Pats 34 Giants 13

P.S. check out USA TODAY Sports Weekly!! Now Bo Pelini will have a ring to flash in the face of all future potential recruits in his new job as head coach at Nebraska. My question is..."When will Bo receive his next Gatorade bath?" Some believe Nebraska will be playing in the Big 12 title game AND a BCS game next season. I think that's a bit much. Let's hope the Big Red make a bowl game, because it seemed very odd not covering a Nebraska bowl game this season.

Staying with college football...LSU is the National Champ and I have no problem with that. There is no perfect system...even a playoff. At least one item became clear this year, if you play in a major conference you don't have to run the table to play for the title. How about the Big 12?!?! I think a 5-3 bowl record is great. The only disappointment was the play of Oklahoma. A&M was a play away from victory, and Colorado (who was not good enough to be in a bowl game) almost made a major comeback.

We welcome your thoughts and don't forget the 'Doug and Daddy Show' weekdays at 11 on ESPN 1460 and 1550 am.

A New Era For 'Doug and Daddy'

Hello 'Doug and Daddy' Fans!!

2008 introduces us to the 'Doug and Daddy' Blog. I'm not much on blogging or hanging out on internet chat rooms, but I know many of you are. The bosses assure me that our new blog will give all a chance to chat more about some of the topics we discuss on the show. So...this will be our first blog. I'm guessing I will be doing most of the blogging, but Daddy (Tony) will chime in from time to time.

With the college bowl season winding down, not many people on the national scene are talking about the Big 12...except to say Missouri should have been in the BCS. I wonder if they would have said the same had Arkansas won. The Big 12 is doing well, and Colorado almost made an amazing comeback and Texas A&M fell two yards short. Where do you think the Big 12 sits in the national picture? Also give us your comments on the National Title game between LSU and Ohio St. I'm leaning towards LSU, and of course Daddy is more than leaning!!

I hope you enjoy and use this site to comment and keep in touch with the 'Doug and Daddy Show'. Don't forget that all of our shows are available on podcast at espnsuperstation.com.

Take care,
Doug
